Short answer: no. NSFAS 2027 applications are not open yet.
We checked the NSFAS website directly on 14 September 2026. A number of websites are claiming that the NSFAS 2027 applications window opened on 1 September 2026. That is not correct, and applying through any link making that claim is a risk.

What NSFAS Has Actually Confirmed
The NSFAS website currently shows the 2026 cycle. Its most recent notice states that the 2026 TVET Trimester 3 window ran from 14 to 23 August 2026 and is now closed.
The useful detail is NSFAS’s reason for moving that window forward. In its own words, the change “keeps Trimester 3 applications clearly separate from the national application cycle for the 2027 academic year”.
So NSFAS has confirmed that a national 2027 application cycle is coming. It has not yet published the opening date.
When Are NSFAS 2027 Applications Likely to Open?
NSFAS has not announced a date, and we will not guess one. What we can say is that the national cycle for a given academic year has historically opened in the last quarter of the preceding year, so a window opening between roughly October and November 2026 would be consistent with past practice.
Watch the official site, not social media. Every year, fake “NSFAS is open” posts circulate before the real announcement. The only reliable source is nsfas.org.za and the myNSFAS portal.
Get Your Documents Ready Before NSFAS 2027 Applications Open
This waiting period before NSFAS 2027 applications open is the most useful time you have. Most NSFAS applications fail on paperwork rather than marks, and gathering documents takes longer than people expect — especially affidavits and certified copies.
- Your South African ID — a certified copy, and the ID itself
- Your parents’ or guardians’ IDs, or death certificates where a parent has passed away
- Proof of income for everyone in the household who earns — payslips, a UIF letter, or a SASSA letter
- An affidavit where a parent is unemployed or self-employed
- Your latest results — Grade 11 final results now, and your NSC results when they arrive
- Proof of disability where applicable
- A working email address and cellphone number that you control, and will still have next year
Certify copies at a police station or post office. Certification is usually accepted for three months, so do it close to when applications open rather than now.
Create Your myNSFAS Account Early
NSFAS 2027 applications will be submitted through a myNSFAS account. Creating it before the rush is worth doing, because the portal is at its slowest in the first days of the window.
- Go to nsfas.org.za and select myNSFAS.
- Register with your ID number, a valid email address and a cellphone number you use.
- Keep the login details somewhere safe. Losing access to the email address you registered with causes serious problems later.
- When applications open, log in and complete the form.
Do Not Wait for NSFAS Alone
NSFAS is not the only funding available, and several bursaries for the 2027 academic year are open right now with deadlines this month:
- Eskom Bursary 2027 — engineering and non-technical degrees, closes 22 September 2026
- StudyTrust — one application covering many sponsors, most close 30 September 2026
- IDC External Bursary — Finance, STEM, Law and Honours, closes 30 September 2026
If you qualify for any of these, apply now. Waiting for NSFAS while these deadlines pass is a common and costly mistake.
Funza Lushaka 2027
If you are considering teaching, Funza Lushaka is worth watching alongside NSFAS 2027 applications. Its last advertised round was for the 2026 academic year, which closed on 1 February 2026. The 2027 round has not opened at the time of writing, and has typically opened around October.
Beware of Fake NSFAS 2027 Applications Scams
NSFAS 2027 applications are free. Nobody can register you, fast-track your application or guarantee approval.
- Never pay anyone to apply on your behalf
- Never share your myNSFAS password
- Apply only through nsfas.org.za — not through links sent on WhatsApp or posted in comments
- Be suspicious of any site claiming NSFAS is open before NSFAS itself announces it

This page was checked against the official NSFAS website on 14 September 2026 and will be updated when NSFAS announces the 2027 application dates. We are not NSFAS and do not receive or process applications.
