The Vetting Process for SAPS Vacancies
SAPS vacancies carry a more thorough screening process than most government posts, and it is worth knowing what to expect before you apply.
Shortlisted applicants must produce originals of their ID, Senior Certificate and all educational qualifications, plus service certificates from previous employers stating the occupation, and a driver’s licence, before the interview. Qualifications and licences are verified with the issuing institutions.
Fingerprints are taken and background enquiries made, which is standard across SAPS vacancies. Shortlisted candidates may be subjected to a full security clearance, and to a vetting process including security screening, fingerprint screening, reference checking and address verification. All shortlisted candidates undergo a personal interview plus two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise on the post’s technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment covering ethical conduct.
Candidates for certain identified posts are vetted against the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 and the Children’s Act, 2005. Anyone appearing on the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register is disqualified. Candidates must disclose whether they are the respondent in an interim or final protection order under the Domestic Violence Act, 1998 or the Protection from Harassment Act, 2011.
Under the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act, 2013, all new SAPS appointments must provide a buccal (inside cheek) sample for a forensic DNA profile, which is loaded to the Elimination Index of the National Forensic DNA Database.
Who Cannot Apply for SAPS Vacancies
Persons who retired from the Public Service by taking a severance package, early retirement or medical retirement are excluded, as are persons with previous convictions.
After the Closing Date
As with most SAPS vacancies, correspondence is conducted with successful candidates only. If you have not been contacted within three months of the closing date, your application was unsuccessful. The Service is under no obligation to fill a post after advertising it.
Employment Equity
The South African Police Service is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and intends to promote representivity in the Public Service through the filling of these posts. Candidates whose transfer or appointment will promote representivity will receive preference.
